Olympus OM10
The Olympus OM10, introduced in 1979, was designed as a more affordable sibling to the professional OM1. It retained the same compact form factor and solid build that made the series so popular but simplified the experience with aperture priority. This made it an accessible entry point for those new to 35mm photography as is precisely why it remains a favourite among beginners and casual film shooters today.
Paired with the Zuiko 50mm f1.8, otherwise known as the original standard kit lens, I was ready to head off for a day exploring a Cornish footpath near Falmouth. The lens was fantastic in use and its smooth focus action made the picture taking process easy. The f1.8 aperture provides enough low light capability to handle a range of lighting conditions, even on an overcast day.

For this test, the camera was loaded with Kodak Colorplus, a film beloved for its affordability and warm, nostalgic tones. Colorplus tends to lean towards softer contrast and a slightly warm colour palette. It’s the perfect choice for capturing natural greens and muted skies on a cloudy day.
During use, one small quirk stood out: the light meter tends to deactivate after being left on for too long, requiring a quick flick of the power switch off and back on to reactivate it. It’s a minor inconvenience but easily manageable once you get into the rhythm. For me, it highlighted that I often leave my camera on between taking photos, a habit I really need to stop.

A notable feature of the OM10 is its Manual Adapter, which can be added to give full manual control over shutter speeds. A great upgrade for photographers ready to move beyond automatic exposure and learn more.
This entire setup, the OM10 body, 50mm f1.8 lens and Kodak Colorplus film, is available as part of our Starter Kit package available in store. The package comes complete with a 90 minute workshop designed to get you shooting confidently from day one.
Out in the field, the OM10 proved to be a joy to use. It’s light enough to carry comfortably on long walks, yet solidly built and reassuring in hand. The bright viewfinder makes composing scenes intuitive and enjoyable.
In summary, the Olympus OM10 with the 50mm f1.8 is an excellent companion for anyone starting their film photography journey. Paired with Kodak Colorplus, you get a reliable, forgiving, and characterful combination perfect for everyday shooting and rediscovering the simple pleasure of analogue photography.
