Olympus OM1n

For a cruise through the Norwegian fjords, I packed an Olympus OM1n fitted with the Zuiko 28mm f3.5 wide angle lens and loaded with Candido 200 colour film. The combination proved to be an excellent choice for landscape photography, delivering vibrant images that captured the scale and beauty of the scenery with remarkable clarity.

The Olympus OM1n remains one of the finest mechanical SLRs ever produced. Compact, lightweight and exceptionally well built, it was a pleasure to carry all day, whether I was exploring the ship’s deck or wandering through the small fjord-side towns. Its fully mechanical operation gave a reassuring sense of control, while the bright viewfinder made composition effortless.

One of the camera’s standout features is its needle metering system. The simple yet highly effective meter allows you to adjust shutter speed and aperture while watching the needle align in the viewfinder, making accurate exposure intuitive and precise. Throughout the trip, the meter consistently delivered well exposed negatives despite changing conditions, from bright midday sunshine reflecting off the water to softer afternoon light filtering through the valleys.

The Zuiko 28mm f3.5 lens was perfectly suited to the dramatic landscapes of Norway. Its wide angle field of view allowed me to maximise the sweeping views of towering mountains and expansive fjords. The lens is impressively sharp, rendering fine detail across the frame while maintaining excellent contrast and colour reproduction.

I chose Candido 200 as its a new film we have started stocking and wanted to see what it could do. Rated at ISO 200, it performs beautifully in bright, well lit conditions and producing punchy tones. The film offers balanced contrast and fine grain, preserving detail in both highlights and shadows while retaining a natural appearance. It also provides enough exposure latitude to comfortably handle the varying lighting conditions encountered during a day at sea or ashore.

The combination of the OM1n’s accurate metering, the versatile 28mm lens and the vivid rendering of Candido 200 created photographs that truly reflected the atmosphere of the Norwegian landscape. Deep blue waters, green mountainsides and snow capped peaks were reproduced with striking colour and impressive sharpness.

The Olympus OM1n paired with the 28mm f3.5 lens is a superb travel and landscape photography setup. Its compact size, reliable needle metering system and excellent optical performance make it a joy to use, while Candido 200 complements the package perfectly with vibrant colour, fine grain and crisp detail. For photographing dramatic scenery such as the Norwegian fjords, this combination delivers consistently beautiful results and remains a highly rewarding way to shoot film.
